There are few things harder than being a single parent, unless you’re raising more than one. Although it can be easy to feel alone in your struggle to balance work, parenting, and all the other responsibilities involved in living life, you are absolutely not alone! As sad as it is to think about, so many other people have gone through the same thing you’re going through that there’s plenty of guidance available from those who have done it before. Here are a few tips for single parents, and some of the ways to stay positive and thrive in the most difficult job in the world!
Set Up a Support System
Unless you’re stranded on Mars, you’re never completely alone. And that’s a good thing, because more than anything, single parents need some help from time to time. It goes further than friends and family: how about your co-workers, fellow churchgoers, and people who share similar interests? If you have trouble finding people near you to join your support system, you can take advantage of social media: there are lots of parenting groups on Facebook that can give you emotional support as well as practical tips.
Find a Way to Have Some Time to Yourself
This ties in with the “set up a support system” idea that came before. No matter what, it’s important to take some time for yourself so you can practice your favorite hobby, catch up on projects, or just to unwind and relax. It’s not easy to find time for yourself when balancing a job and the responsibilities of parenting, so take full advantage of the time you find and let your friends and family help you when they can.
Make Sure Your Kids Feel Like Kids
This may sound a bit strange, but a lot of times single parents treat their kids like friends to lean on, and not kids. You may have met a child who was forced to “grow up fast” and take on adult responsibilities as a kid, and a lot of times having a single parent had a lot to do with that. I’m not saying that you should abstain your child from responsibility, of course! Just try to make sure that they are still allowed to be kids and play from time to time.
