I especially find the story of these fashionable deaf twin sisters intriguing. After reading their story, I was deeply inspired to remain grateful and find the silver lining in every situation

“We are Hermone and Heroda Behrane, half Eritrean and half Ethiopian. We weren’t born deaf… we were 7 years old when my mother noticed that we were deaf. She says that we were playing in the backyard of our house and she kept calling us but we did not hear at all. That was when she suspected something was wrong…when our brother went deaf too our family decided to move to the UK for medical help…” Read: Cobhams Asuquo, The Gift of Blindness

“We had quite a lot of barriers throughout our life especially our careers, but we fight for it…we have to use our deafness and being black women to break these barriers. Our bond is unbreakable. We do many things, we can finish each other’s sentences, read each other’s minds and feel each other’s pain. Yes, it’s real.”

Growing up in Eritrea, the sisters had a happy childhood, and like many twins, they share a special bond. Hermon once injured her cheek while riding her mountain bike. Heroda wasn’t even with her but said she knew something had happened. “When my left cheek started hurting, I knew she was in trouble. … It was the only explanation for my pain,” Heroda said

“Hermone’s acting career started when she travelled to South America and mine started when I landed a role for a television commercial. We both have blossoming careers in modelling and acting and now we have a fashion blog, ‘Being her’ is where we model affordable urban and traditional Eritrean outfits.”

“Being deaf doesn’t stop us from what we want to do because we can do anything except hear. People are hungry for real inspiration…and we want to tell them that deaf people can do it too. We want to tell people around the world that you should embrace disability, not hide from it
